The black footed ferret has relatively little in common with the ferrets that most people keep as pets today. These ferrets exist now mainly in captivity and are widely held to be an endangered species. The black footed ferret is no longer believed to exist anywhere in the wild in Canada, and in very few places in the United States.

The plight of the black footed ferret came about because of the prairie dog. The black footed ferret was actually a predator of the prairie dog, but when an effort was made back in the forties to get rid of prairie dogs, unfortunately, the black footed ferret also fell prey to this effort. While efforts are currently being made to bring the black footed ferret back into the wild, the numbers just aren't there to get this species off of the ground.

If you were thinking of the black footed ferret as a pet, think again, even if they weren't endangered, black footed ferrets are wild animals that are not suited for captivity.
